What is SmartPill®?
The SmartPill® capsule is an ingestible medical device that your doctor can use to evaluate the motility (motion) of your gastrointestinal tract.
A capsule is swallowed by the patient. When ingested, the capsule transits the intestines by peristalsis or the normal rhythmic contraction of the intestinal muscles. As the capsule travels through the digestive system, it collects data and then wirelessly sends that information to a data receiver that is worn on a lanyard around the neck or on a belt clip. The patient is free to move about during the exam and can return to normal activity such as work during the exam. At the end of the procedure, the data is downloaded from the receiver into a computer, and the data are later reviewed by a physician. The capsule is passed by the patient into the toilet and flushed away. It does not need to be retrieved or returned.
What type of diseases can be diagnosed with SmartPill?
A SmartPil®l can help the doctor determine the cause for recurrent or persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and early full feeling or bloating. Some common examples of motility diseases diagnosed by SmartPill® include:
